According to Korean media reports on May 14, Son Heung-min recently submitted an official complaint to the Gangnam Police after a woman in her 20s, along with a male accomplice, allegedly attempted to extort money by falsely claiming she was pregnant with Son’s child. Soon, it is revealed that the woman who blackmailed him is actually his ex-girlfriend!

The incident reportedly dates back to June last year, when the woman approached Son, demanding a large sum of money—estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of KRW. According to a Chosun Ilbo report on May 15, the woman—identified as Ms. A—was in a past relationship with Son and falsely claimed she was pregnant in order to extort money from him.

Ms. A sent Son’s side an ultrasound photo, alleging she was pregnant with his child. As a result, Son reportedly gave her approximately 300 million KRW (around $215,000 USD). The woman reportedly told Son, “I’m pregnant with your child, what are you going to do?” in a scheme that has been likened to a drama script.

However, the situation escalated when a man in his 40s, Mr. B, who was reportedly in a relationship with Ms. A, contacted Son’s side in March. Using the same “pregnancy claim” as leverage, he attempted to extort an additional 70 million KRW (about $51,000 USD). After enduring three months of pressure, Son’s manager informed the footballer, prompting Son to file a police report.

Son refused to comply with Mr. B’s demand, and because the extortion attempt failed, Mr. B is being charged with attempted blackmail. He reportedly has a prior criminal record and even faxed the alleged ultrasound image to an academy run by Son’s father.

Son’s team has confirmed that the accusations were completely fabricated and emphasized the seriousness of the blackmail attempt. Son’s representatives stated that they felt pressured to comply with Ms. A’s earlier demands due to concerns that the scandal could negatively affect both Son’s personal image and his team.

“We will respond strongly with zero leniency to those who used blatant lies to attempt blackmail. We want to make it clear that Son Heung-min is the undeniable victim in this case.”

The Gangnam Police Department is currently working to verify the full extent of the allegations and plans to pursue appropriate legal action against the suspects. On May 14, Seoul’s Gangnam Police arrested Ms. A on blackmail charges and Mr. B on attempted blackmail charges. Both of their homes were searched during the investigation.

The case has also garnered international attention, with outlets such as the BBC and The Sun reporting that “Tottenham captain Son Heung-min filed a police complaint after being blackmailed with a fake pregnancy claim.”

The scandal comes at a crucial moment for Son, who is preparing for the UEFA Europa League Final (vs. Manchester United) with Tottenham and aiming for his first career championship title. He recently returned to action in the Premier League against Crystal Palace on May 11 and is expected to play in the upcoming match against Aston Villa.

As one of the most beloved figures in Korean sports, Son Heung-min, captain of the South Korean national football team and a star striker for Tottenham Hotspur, is often praised for both his talent and scandal-free personal life. His humility, dedication to football, and low-key lifestyle have made him a role model across Asia and beyond.

Born in 1992 in Chuncheon, Son remains one of the most respected sports figures in Asia. As investigations continue, supporters hope that justice will prevail and that this unfortunate episode will not overshadow the career of a player known as much for his character as for his on-field brilliance.
